  • Both psychologists and psychiatrists support mental health, but they have different training and roles.

    • A psychologist is trained in assessing, diagnosing, and treating emotional and psychological difficulties using evidence-based talk therapies. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.

    • A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health and can prescribe medication. They often work with more complex or severe mental health conditions.

    Psychologists and psychiatrists often work together to provide comprehensive care.

  • No, you don’t need a referral to see a psychologist. However, if you want to access Medicare rebates, you’ll need a referral and Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Without a referral, you can still book privately.

  • In your first session, the psychologist will typically ask questions to get to know you and understand your concerns, background, and goals for therapy. You’ll discuss what brings you to therapy, any past experiences with mental health, and what you hope to achieve. The psychologist may explain their approach and discuss confidentiality and the structure of sessions. It’s normal to feel a little nervous, but remember that the first session is about building rapport and setting a foundation for your work together.

  • Consider the psychologist’s areas of interest (e.g., anxiety, trauma, depression), therapeutic approach (e.g., CBT, schema therapy), and whether you feel comfortable and understood. Also, think about practical factors like location, fees, and availability. Ultimately, choose someone you feel would be a good fit for you, which you may only discover after meeting them.

  • Being open and honest with your Psychologist and set clear goals. You may like to take note of key ideas or questions for your next session if there are things you don't want to forget. There may be new skills or techniques you learn in sessions, thus practicing outside your appointments may help with your therapeutic progress. Give feedback to your psychologist if needed, and be patient with your progress.

  • When appointments are booked, the Psychologist reserves the whole hour especially for you (50minutes of face to face). We understand that sometimes you may be unable to keep an appointment because of unexpected illness or personal emergency. If this happens, please contact us as soon as possible to explain the situation. You may call the office at any time (using 0494139168), even after hours, as we do have an answering service that allows you to leave a message.

    If you need to cancel or postpone an appointment, please provide at least 24 hours notice otherwise the following fees will apply:

    • Less than 24 hours' notice: 50% of the session fee.

    • Within two hours of the session or no-show: Full session fee.
